2009 British Masters Cross Country Relay Championships !
Vets XC Relays at Mansfield on Saturday
Exactly one week after frustratingly missing out on medals
at the North of England Road Relays in Leeds,
Morpeth Harriers experienced a high note when they claimed
a Bronze Medal Podium placing at the British Masters Cross Country Relay
Championships held at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield on Saturday 3rd October.

The club's Over 40 Veteran Men bettered their 2008 fourth placing effort,
by finishing behind winners Leicester Coritanian,
and fellow North East rivals Sunderland Harriers,
who grabbed the Silver medal at halfway
when Brian Rushworth passed Ian Abbis.

Saturday Morpeths Alan Shepherd in action at Mansfield on
Saturday
Abbis was however delighted to share the medal winning podium
with his Morpeth Harriers clubmates Phil Walker, Paul Waterston,
Neil Wilkinson, Alan Shepherd, and Gavin Bayne,
who had all battled their way through gale force winds to claim some glory.

It was particularly pleasing for Wilkinson, who had missed
the previous weeks Road Relays, as he clocked Morpeth Harriers
fastest time on the day of 13m38s, over the two lap 4k circuit.

Morpeth Harriers can also be particularly pleased with their
Over 40 Mens B team who finished ninth, and were the first B team to
finish, courtesy of Alistair MacDonald, David Steel, Gordon Dixon,

Norham 10k Road Race !
135 finishers took part in the Norham 10k Road Race
on Sunday 27th September.

whose time of 32m34s saw him finish nearly a minute
clear of his closest rival Matt Bell of Edinburgh AC.

and he was sixth in the Over 40 Veteran Mens section.
Peter Scaife was the next home for Morpeth in 54th place in 44m59s,

Sunderland Harriers Open Cross Country Races !
Morpeth vet Phil Walker clocked the fastest time of the day of 9m15s,
when he secured second team place for the club,
at the 27th Sunderland Harriers Open Cross Country Veteran Mens 4 x 1.7mile
Relay held at Farringdon School on Saturday 12th September.

Fresh from recent excellent performances at Tynedale and New Marske,
Phil did all he could to try to eat into a healthy lead that had been
set by the host club over the previous three legs,
however was still thirty four seconds adrift at the end of the final leg.

The early legs of Paul Waterston (9m32s) and George Hall (9m31s)
had kept the squad well in contention, and Ian Abbis,
who is in the early stages of a competitive comeback,
following several years out of the sport due to family commitments,
can feel well encouraged by the fact that his 10m04s,
(17th fastest of the day)
for the third leg did not see him lose too much ground,
leaving Walker to battle all the way to the finish.

Archie Jenkins ran for an incomplete Morpeth Veteran Mens B team,
coming home in fifteenth place on the first leg in 11m18s.

The event was once again hosted by Tony Woodcock,
(Tony Woodcock Planning Consultants) and his wife Pam,

however those who got to the venue saw Doug Cockburn,
(Chairman of Morpeth Harriers & AC) present recipients with their awards.

The Ladies award for 2008 went to Sue Calvert for the second year running,
and Sue Smith and Jane Blackett took the second and third prizes.

and the minor placings went to Gordon Dixon and Richard Driscoll respectively.

Pam Woodcock on behalf of the sponsors said that

Prix, as she felt because of its structure, all those involved
could compete on a level playing field.
She went on to thank Neil McAnany for his efforts in
keeping the score accurately throughout the year,
Hamish McCallister-Williams for his training sessions
that kept everyone focused, Hud Stoker, George Patterson, Alistair
MacDonald and Steve McDonald for publicity and photographs,

and thanked Tony and Pam for their continued efforts,

Morpeth Harriers Over 40 Veteran Mens squad succeeded in placing fourth

US Master in Morpeth 10k !
David Kroupa with Jim Alder
One man who certainly enjoyed running the Morpeth 10k for the first time ever
was visiting athlete David Kroupa of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.
David was in England for the first time, and visiting his wife parents in Peterlee for 14 days.

Being a 5k, Duathlon and Triathlon specialist in the USA,
and having just turned 50, he decided to try to find an athletic
event to his liking, to take part in while he was visiting.

On checking the Internet he found the Morpeth 10k,
even though it was a little above his normal distance, he decided to give it a try.
He described the course and the experience as very enjoyable,
and as he normally runs in 90 degrees of humidity,
the slightly humid conditions on the night didn't really trouble him.

His performance certainly bore out his credentials,
as he finished in an excellent 41st place,
and in a superb time of 38m46s,
and picked up the prize of second Over 50 Male Veteran into the bargain.

David promised he would give a glowing report of the event
to his running colleagues at Premier Running Club in Fort Lauderdale,
and added that he hoped to return someday to once again compete in the Morpeth 10k,
and he thanked the organisers for putting on a splendid event for both him and all who ran.

Castles and Islands Logo
Morpeth vets, Kevin Bray and Bob Sewell took part in
The 2008 Castles & Islands Challenge Race
on June 20th and June 21st.
Below Kevin describes how they tackled the challenge...........

Its ten past midnight on Saturday morning and I’m bobbing about in a rubber dinghy being rowed into Lindisfarne
harbour by Bob Sewell as part of our latest mad caper, competing in the Castles & Islands Challenge.

The event began at 6.30pm with 16 pairs of runners setting off from Alnwick castle in a straight race down to Coquet
Yacht club at Amble, via Warkworth Castle.

We came in 4th team, and then boarded ‘our’ yacht a 34’ racer/cruiser called Cactus Jack. The Yacht was skippered
by Nick Spurr, the owner of Amble boatyard and crewed by his son Ben, his foreman Steve and Bob’s brother in law
Ken – hence the invite to take part.

Stepping on board I couldn’t help thinking that a yacht like this (it really was the business) deserved better runners than
a couple of 50 'plussers' !

Castles and Islands Challenge Race 2008

We enjoyed a fantastic evening weather wise sailing north round Coquet Island, through the Farnes to reach Holy
Island just after midnight.

Once we landed we had to run around the island visiting three checkpoints that took us on an 8 mile circuit from the
harbour via Lindisfarne castle.

We saved time and distance because the tide was out allowing fast running on hard sand before we cut back into the
dunes to find the obelisk at Emmanuel Head then the footpaths to the castle and harbour.
The sky was clear and the moon so bright that we hardly needed head torches.

Back on board we got dried, changed and brewed up as we sailed south, again through the Farnes before a ‘choppy’
disembark and row into Seahouses harbour, from where we ran north along the beach before cutting through the dunes
to circuit Bamburgh castle, a run of about 7 miles.

Sunrise at Castles and Islands Challenge Race 2008

A feature of an event like this is that you really have no idea of where you are in the field at any particular time because
you can take on the runs in any order and the yachts are handicapped by a system that was beyond me! All we knew
was that we seemed to be towards the front of the field position wise and Bob and I were running well helped by
skipper Nick’s strategies to use the tides to maximum advantage.

Bob Sewell on board ship

However the tide wasn’t always going to be out and the next run we did in the early hours was a killer. The yacht
anchored off Low Newton and Bob rowed us into the harbour. We checked in with the marshal then began our run
down the beach to Dunstanburgh castle and back. It was 41 minutes of purgatory for me – my legs were dead and
Bob just seemed to be pottering along hardly sinking into the soft sand where it seemed I was up to my knees!

We were both glad to get back on board and when we set sail for the finish at Amble it seemed we were lying in
second place on the course. The wind had really died and Nick used all his skill to find what breeze there was to allow
us to overtake the leading yacht about 400m from the finish at the harbour entrance. We finished at 9.30am Saturday
morning in 15 hrs 5 mins and so became the course record holders – the first time in either of our running careers we
have held a ‘record’ so we are making the most of it!

Bob Sewell at Castles and Islands Challenge Race 2008

We tied up in the marina and then enjoyed a proper breakfast sitting in the sun on deck – we then discovered that
sailors like a drink. There is none of this waiting until the ‘sun dips over the yardarm’ carry on.
Any excuse to break out the rum – by the time I got to bed at 11.15 that morning I was in some state!

We went to the prize presentation that night to discover that we had finished 3rd overall on handicap and 4th fastest team of runners.
The total running distance is estimated at 30 miles and we were timed at 3.48.

Kevin and Bob at Castles and Islands Challenge Race 2008

This is an event that is something totally different. It was hard work, but great fun and it is well organised by ex –
Morpeth Harrier Pete Hammond and his team. Safety is a priority.

It’s going to get more popular so opportunities for runners to take part are bound to increase–
so keep an eye on the Coquet Yacht Clubs Website.......

National Veterans Road Relay Championships !
Attending the British National Veterans Road Relay
Championships for the 1st time since 2001,
Morpeths 8 man team acquitted themselves well in the
O/40 category to finish 13th overall at Sutton Park,
Birmingham on Saturday 17th May.
Coincidentally, this was the position the 2001 team finished in.
With a team of mixed ability, the club were aiming for a top 20 finish
in a field of just over 50 teams from all over the UK.

In wet and warm conditions, particularly good performances
came from Paul Waterston (15:48),
Phil Walker (15:50) and Les Atkinson (16:10) who,
between them, had Morpeth up to 3rd place after the 3rd leg.
However, Morpeth slipped down the rankings to 9th place
with 4th and 5th leg runners Gavin Bayne(17:28)
and Gordon Dixon (17:16) keeping them, nevertheless,
in the top 10. Alan Boyd (18:44) and Ian Corner (18:05),
running legs 6 and 7 worked hard to keep the club near the top
as conditions dried eventually running in 11th and then 13th place overall.

It was the first time each of them has represented the club at a national road championships.
Alistair MacDonald (17:52) brought the club home to maintain 13th place overall.
He passed the Sunderland Harriers runner, last years bronze medallists on the last leg,
but was passed, in turn by Oxford whose team included ex-Morpeth Harrier John Lisiewicz.

Bristol and West won for the 3rd year from Leicester and Clayton Le Moor.
Sunderland Harriers finished 14th and North Shields,
the only other north east team present, 30th.

Ian Corner went onto complete the Manchester 10k the next day,
where he recorded a personal best of 39:45 in the process.

2007 Vets Presentation Night !
The Vets and there award at Thursdays presentation
Forty Veteran athletes from Morpeth Harriers turned out in
support of their super fit colleagues at the clubs annual
Grand Prix 2007 Presentation Night, held at the Joiners Arms
in Morpeth at 7.30pm on Thursday 13th March.

The event which is sponsored by Tony Woodcock Planning Consultants
was hosted by Tony himself, along with his wife Pam,
who has been a member of Morpeth Harriers for a good number of years.
They were pleased to introduce their guests of honour, Ernie Slaughter and Jim Alder MBE.
Two nights earlier at the Morpeth Harriers AGM, Ernie had bowed out as the clubs President,
a post he has held for around 23 years, and Jim had taken over as the clubs new President
after all his many and long remembered years of service both as an outstanding athlete,
and as a Coach and Club Committee Official.

Ernie Slaughter and Pam Woodcock at Thursdays presentation

Ernie has now taken up the role as Honorary President which means
he will be more of a background figurehead, and although he intends to
cut down his workload as a Club Official, he will still be around to
give sound support and advice when required.
Both had agreed to make the presentations,
and Ernie opted to present the Womens awards,
which meant he ended up with all the lovely kisses.
Jim had dashed back over from Monkton Stadium
in Jarrow to present the Mens awards.

Before the awards took place Pam Woodcock paid tribute to all those
who had turned out to give support to the event on the night,
she went on to thank the clubs Press Officer and Webmaster,
George Patterson and Hudson Stoker for their efforts in promoting the event,
both in the Morpeth Herald, and on the Website, and paid particular tribute to the
quality of the Website and all the work carried out to promote the club.

Pam was very passionate about the Veterans Grand Prix, because she
recognised it as the only event within the club that gave everyone within
the Veteran age spans the opportunity of competing on a level playing field,
and she was delighted that it had once again been well supported
over the 15 chosen events throughout the year.
She thanked Ernie and Jim for turning out to support their night.

Pam and Tony Woodcock at Thursdays presentation

Tony Woodcock said he was delighted as sponsor to be associated with the event,
and felt that all those involved had competed with good humour,
the club representation had been good, and as a result the
Blue and White vest of Morpeth Harriers had been worn with distinction.
This led on to the presentation of awards

Sue Calvert receives her award at Thursdays presentation
WOMEN (Presented by Ernie Slaughter)
1st Sue Calvert.
2nd Michelle Woodley,
3rd Jane Blackett,

Paul Waterston receives his award at Thursdays presentation
MEN (Presented by Jim Alder)
1st Paul Waterston,
2nd Richard Driscoll,
3rd Gordon Dixon,

After the presentation Ernie Slaughter gave special mention to the
fact that nearly forty people had turned out on the night,
this had heartened him because of the recent poor turnout of
Seniors for major events, and that it had indeed been a pleasure to be present.

A special presentation was then made by the sponsors to Les Thain
for his long term organisational skills in relation to the Grand Prix.
Les was now stepping down from the role.
Unfotunately he was unable to be present so
Chris Dentice accepted the award on his behalf.

On behalf of the Club, George Patterson, the Press Officer,
thanked Pam and Tony for their continued support to the
event, and hoped that their support would continue,
and also praised them for the splendid buffet they had provided.

Finally Pam and Tony thanked the Landlord George
and the team at the Joiners Arms for their support and help.

2008 Royal Signals Road Relays !
At the North Eastern Counties Royal Signals Road Relay Championships
held at Watergate Park, Lobley Hill, Gateshead on Saturday 9th February.
The Veteran Mens Relay provided a close finish where Sunderland Harriers
just pipped Morpeth Harriers by eleven seconds with Elswick Harriers
a further eighteen seconds adrift in third place.

Morpeth Harriers got off to an excellent start with Paul Waterston
finishing in second place behind North Shields Poly and only two seconds adrift.

However they slipped back to fifth on second leg where Gordon Dixon clocked 11m57s.

Things looked better on Leg three where Les Atkinson's eighth
fastest time of 11m01s saw them rise back up to third.

So at halfway they were nine seconds adrift of second placed Sunderland Harriers,
and a further thirteen seconds adrift of then leaders Elswick.

Fourth leg saw yet another change with Elswick relinquishing the lead to
Sunderland as they slipped to third, and North Shields Poly came into the picture
as they finished second and Morpeth slipped to fourth with Ian Corner
running in his first ever Championship clocking 11m53s.

Fifth leg saw yet another dramatic twist, as Phil Walker grabbed
a superb lead of thirty eight seconds over Sunderland by clocking
the fastest Veteran Mens time of the day of 10m42s.

Gavin Bayne at Signals Relays
This left Morpeth's final leg runner Gavin Bayne with the toughest
of battles to hold off the tenacious Paul Merrison of Sunderland.
Gavin gave the occasion every effort he could muster with his clocking of 11m45s,
however just lost out in the final stages as the faster and younger Merrison stole the advantage.

It was an excellent result for Morpeth however with Walker and Corner
picking up their first Championship medals in the form of Silver,
and extra special for Walker having just become a father for the second time.

Start Fitness North East Harrier League Sherman Cup & Davison Shield Meeting !
Intermittent blustery showers failed to dampen the spirits of athletes
who took part in the first meeting of the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League
held at Temple Park, South Shields on Saturday 24th October.

The opening fixture, which now traditionally accommodates
the Sherman Cup (Mens) and Davison Shield (Womens) competitions,
saw Gateshead Harriers win the former, and Morpeth Harriers
were once again winners of the latter.

Top performer on the day for Morpeth Harriers was
Jane Mooney in the Womens section.

Jane Mooney finished an excellent second to Chester Le Street's
Sarah Wilkinson in the Senior Womens event, and nearly a minute
clear of Gateshead's Kim Simpson, herself a former
Davison Shield Senior Womens competition winner.
Mooney's was one of a good number of determined Morpeth efforts
on the day that saw them retain the Davison Shield by a margin
of five points over Gateshead, who were the only other team
to close over the four events to count.

Despite not winning a Womens team count Morpeth Harriers
still managed to win by the narrowest of margins.

Their best results came from the Under 15 Girls
and Under17/Junior Womens events.
Carley May Webster led the Morpeth squad home in the
Under 15 Girls event, and only just missed out on an
individual medal spot by seven seconds when she finished fourth.
The combined placings of Miriam Inverarity (12th),
and Lucy Shuttleworth (15th), added to that of
Webster saw Morpeth finish second to Sunderland.

Morpeth also finished second to Gateshead in the
Under 17/Junior Womens event courtesy of
Rachael Steel (7th), Hannah Rank (10th),
and Catriona MacDonald (20th)

Alison Brown (7th), was first home for Morpeth Harriers
in the Under 13 Girls event, which saw them finish as fourth team,
with further support coming from excellent runs
by Sarah Wilkes (9th), and Rebecca Dodds (23rd).

Fifth place was gained by Morpeth Senior Women led by the
aforementioned Jane Mooney, with Claire Bruce (14th)
and Shuna Rank (39th), providing the supporting counts.

Northern League Division 3 !
Morpeth Harriers Senior Men and Womens Northern League
Division 3 campaign got off to an excellent start at Huntington Stadium,
York on Saturday 2nd May.

Morpeths Womens efforts contributed greatly to the squads overall success,
with Womens Team Manager Aiveen Fox having four wins,
Laura Weightman three, Elaine Telford, Claire Reid,
Zoe Armstrong and Northern League debutant
Hannah Rank all securing two victories.

Fox won the A races of the 1500m and 3000m in
respective times of 4m50.4s, and 10m15.9s,
after earlier winning the B race of the 800m in 2m26.3s.
She also performed well when winning the B event
of the Long Jump with her best of 3.66m.

Still celebrating her superb success at the North Eastern Athletics League
at Jarrow on the Wednesday, Laura Weightman turned in some fine
performances to win the 400m A race in 60.8s,
the 800m A race in 2m11.5s, and ran a very first and
rare 200m B race to claim her hat-trick of victories in 27.2s.
This was marginally just adrift of her clubmate Elaine Telford's 26.4s,
which had seen her win the 200m A race,
after earlier taking the 100m in 12.7s.

Claire Reid enjoyed double winning success in the Discus and Shot
with respective bests of 34.22m and 10.38m, and was
third in the Hammer with 25.48m.
Reid also finished fifth in the A section of the Javelin
with a best effort of 15.19m, and Laura Weightman added more
points to her clubs tally when she finished second in the B string with 11.98m.

Zoe Armstrong clocked 4m57.8s to secure a Morpeth B
string victory in the 1500m, and went on to claim her second
victory in the B string Shot with 6.26m.

Hannah Rank certainly earned her first call up as an Under 17

ERRA National 6 Stage Road Relay Championships !
Aiveen Fox in action at Sutton Park
on Saturday 18th April
Morpeths Senior Women finished as fourth Northern team
in fourteenth place overall in their National 6 Stage Championship,
held at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield on Saturday 18th April.

Gwenda Cavill in action at Sutton
Park on Saturday 18th April
The Northern Silver medallists were without leading light Laura Weightman,
so Team manager Gwenda Cavill stepped in to run the final leg,
and to her credit she held off all challengers to
maintain her position throughout her 19m39s
clocking for the 3 mile distance.

Delyth James in action at Sutton
Park on Saturday 18th April
The squad had been boosted earlier on second leg
by an excellent run of 17m25s by Delyth James,
which took them up four places to fifteenth following
Aiveen Fox's steady 17m41s on the opening encounter.

Sarah Graham in action at
Sutton Park on Saturday 18th April
Sarah Graham on third leg, had taken her place in the squad
despite a niggling leg strain sustained in the Isle of Man
Running Festival, and tried to hold her position,
but slipped back to eighteenth with her clocking of 18m23s.

Kate Chapman in action at
Sutton Park on Saturday 18th April
Kate Chapman managed to claw back one place with her
fourth leg clocking of 19m16s.

Jane Mooney in action at Sutton

Northern Athletics Road Relay Championships !
The Cheshire cat had a grin as wide as the mouth of the Tyne
when Morpeth Harriers Senior Ladies won medals for the
very first time at the Northern Athletics 6 Stage Road
Relay Championships, held at Stockport's
Woodbank Stadium on Sunday 5th April.

Morpeths Senior Womens Squad at Stockport

It also provided a more than welcome homecoming for their
long serving Club Secretary and mentor Mike Bateman,
who had moved to the North East in the late sixties from the very same area,
and it would be very true to say that his smile clearly showed how
delighted he was with his Female performers on the day,
in that they had chosen his patch to produce their best ever performance.

Having finished 5th, 7th 8th (twice) and 9th in the last
few years of the running of the Championships,
it could be conceived that inevitably, and deservedly that
Morpeths Senior Women would eventually win some medals,
and on Sunday they did both their club and the region proud
by producing a superb performance to take Silver behind
their North East rivals Chester Le Street,
who were winning for the fourth consecutive occasion.

Morpeth didn't make it easy for them however,
because after three superb legs by Aiveen Fox (13m56s)
Delyth James (13m57s) and Sarah Graham (14m34s)
saw them progress from eighth to fourth,
Chester Le Street had only progressed to ninth.

Laura Weightman on leg four did further damage when she
easily passed all in front of her to establish a forty six second
lead over their closest rivals, who were then Stockport,
by clocking the clubs fastest time of the day,
and the second fastest of the leg, of 13m53s.

Meanwhile Emma Waterhouse had spurred the Chester Le Street
fortunes by taking them up to fourth with the legs fastest time of 13m45s.
It was definitely pressure cooker feeling as Kate Chapman
embarked on the fifth leg, however it was only Chester Le Street's
Morag McDonnell who could make any impression,
as eventually she caught Kate around halfway,
and went on to forge a forty five second marginal lead.

Kate meanwhile ran bravely, calling upon all her reserves
to keep the margin down, and as a result of this she had created
a forty one second margin in front of the third placed club Leeds City,
for Jane Mooney to take into the sixth and final leg.

Jane battled away, and when she crossed the finish line in 14m03s,
which was Morpeth's fourth fastest time of the day,
and also fourth of the leg, she had kept Chester Le Street's
winning margin down to less than a minute, and had increased
the lead over third, who eventually became Hallamshire, to forty six seconds.

So Silver medals were won, and the real core strength of the
Morpeth Womens performance was that four of their
runners were all within ten seconds of each other in time terms,
and they were all top times within their particular legs.

Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League ( 6 )
The curtain came down on another Cross Country season
on Saturday 28th March, with British Athletes competing
for highly prized medals at the World Championships in Jordan,
and local attention being centred on the final Start Fitness
sponsored North Eastern Harrier League meeting,
held at Temple Park Leisure Centre, in South Shields.

The weather did not play its part however,
as athletes faced a biting cold wind on the open stretches
within the nature of the course at South Shields.

Gemma Floyd in action at Harrier League at South Shields on Saturday 28th March
Those factors did not deter the winner of the Senior Womens event,
Gemma Floyd of Morpeth Harriers.
It was indeed a superb comeback and tonic for Floyd,
as she had not raced for around ten years, when she had run
under the surname of Taylor, and was indeed a very competitive runner.

That competitive edge certainly appeared as if had never been away,
as with her Slow Pack advantage of three minutes over some of her most illustrious rivals,
she strode to a five second marginal victory over her closest rival,
who just happened to be the seasons best performer Kim Simpson
of Gateshead Harriers, who had run well to force her
way through to second from the Fast Pack, considering the conditions.

Nevertheless it was a tremendous boost for Floyd,
who is going to continue her comeback with a cautious approach,
and hopes to do a number of longer Track races during the Summer months.
Morpeth Harriers finished thirteenth as a team in this event,
with further support coming from Margaret MacDonald (71st) (Slow pack),
and Claire Bruce (75th) (Fast Pack).
This result also gave Morpeth a seasons final positioning of sixth for the Senior Women.

2009 Royal Signals Road Relays !
Silver Medals were won by Morpeths Womens squad
at the North East Counties Royal Signals Road Relays, held at Gateshead's
Watergate Park Nature Reserve on Saturday 21st March.

The competition was rearranged after it was cancelled due to
icy conditions in early February, and on this occasion
organisers couldn't have wished for a better day,
with sunshine and a slight breeze delighting those present.

By running the third fastest time of the day of 11m39s,
Jane Mooney completed a last gasp effort to win Silver Medals
for Morpeth Harriers Senior Women by closing down early leaders
North Shields Poly to win by one second at the finish line.

Jane Mooney in action at Signals Relays
on Saturday 21st March
Jane's time was only bettered by Karen Johns's 11m19s,
which had given North Shields Poly a first leg lead, which
they held throughout the following two, and Chester Le Street's
Maxine Czarnecka who grabbed the lead halfway
round the final leg with her excellent 11m37s.

Mooney's final effort however was also too powerful for
North Shields Poly's final leg runner Wendy Pawsey, and
quite justly rewarded the earlier efforts of her illustrious
Morpeth Harriers colleagues Claire Bruce (14m19s)
Aiveen Fox (11m57s) and Sarah Graham (12m22s)
which had seen them move from eighth to fourth,
then to third and into what was very much a medal challenging position.

The event was once again hosted by Tony Woodcock,
(Tony Woodcock Planning Consultants) and his wife Pam,

however those who got to the venue saw Doug Cockburn,

The Ladies award for 2008 went to Sue Calvert for the second year running,
and Sue Smith and Jane Blackett took the second and third prizes.

In the Mens section, it proved to be another victory for Paul Waterston,
and the minor placings went to Gordon Dixon and Richard Driscoll respectively.

Pam Woodcock on behalf of the sponsors said that

keeping the score accurately throughout the year,
Hamish McCallister-Williams for his training sessions
that kept everyone focused, Hud Stoker, George Patterson, Alistair
MacDonald and Steve McDonald for publicity and photographs,

to play their part as sponsors during the forthcoming year.

Doug Cockburn responded on behalf of himself and the club,
and thanked Tony and Pam for their continued efforts,

Jane Mooney in action at the Durham Cathedral Cross Country Relays
Jane Mooney clocked a solid 10m57s to take them
up to second place on the second leg.
However Alyson Dixon's tremendous fastest time

which meant that Morpeth's Laura Weightman had to settle
for second place when clocking the day's third fastest time of 10m45s.

Morpeth Harriers Womens C team won the Veteran Womens
team race by a margin of seven seconds over
North Shields Poly when finishing ninth overall.

to bring them home to their final placing.

Not far behind them in eleventh place were
Morpeth's young Womens B team.

North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships !
It was certainly not for the fainthearted when athletes took on the tricky and testing
conditions at the 103rd Annual North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships
held at Wrekenton on Saturday 13th December.

Heavy overnight rain had left pools of water over various parts of the course,
and just before the first event began, the rains returned along with a cold wind
that made life even harder for the organisers.
However with a tremendous amount of determination and grit,
the nine race programme was completed before darkness fell,
and perhaps more importantly, before temperatures dropped to near freezing.

Morpeth Harriers Senior Women finished as third team
behind winners Chester Le Street, and second placed Gateshead.
They were led home by Jane Mooney who finished seventh.

Supporting counts came from eighth placed Aiveen Fox
and twelfth finisher Sarah Graham.
Other Morpeth finishers in this event were Claire Bruce (38th)
Gwenda Cavill (41st) and Margaret MacDonald (55th).

Morpeth Harriers Senior Women also gave good account for themselves
when they finished in eighteenth place at the end of their 4x 4.4k event at the English National 6 and 4 Stage Road Relays held on Saturday 18th October, at Birmingham's Sutton Park.

They were sixth from the North, and also second from the North East,
with local rivals Chester Le Street being dominant in winning team Bronze
and having Scottish International Freya Murray clocking
the fastest time of the day of 13m50s.

The event marked the Senior National Relay debut for Laura Weightman,
who had made her Senior Northern Relay debut at Hartlepool two weeks previous.
Weightman ran despite sporting a hefty bruise from a fall sustained
in training when tripping over a stone a few days before,
however showed caution on the first leg to come home
in 36th place with her clocking of 15m42s.

Although clocking a second slower, second leg runner Jane Mooney
managed to climb twelve places to put her club in a more challenging position.
In clocking a time of 15m29s, which proved to be just outside the top ten on Leg Three,

Aiveen Fox continued the progress by climbing a further five places
to nineteenth and only three seconds adrift of Lincoln Wellington's starlet Blue Haywood.

Sarah Graham battled her way round the fourth and final leg
with the Lincoln runner Lara Thomas, and eventually
pushed ahead by ten seconds with her clocking of 16m18s.

As aforementioned Morpeth Women were second from the North East
with further results showing Wallsend A (64th) and Wallsend B (77th).

Silver medals came the way of the Morpeth Harriers Womens team.
Chester Le Street A team set off on Leg One fully intent on retaining their title
and immediately established a fourteen second lead over their B team,
with Morpeth lying third, a further seven seconds adrift courtesy of Aiveen Fox's
sixth fastest overall clocking of 11m42s.
Aiveen Fox at Signals Relays

Unfortunately Morpeth's second leg runner Sarah Graham drifted
a little as she struggled home in a disappointing 12m24s,
which she admitted later was a result of still carrying tiredness in her legs
following the BUSA Championships in Swansea the previous week.

Third leg runner Jane Mooney still couldn't eat into second placed
Chester Le Street B's leading margin despite a solid performance of 11m45s.

Laura Weightman at Signals Relays
With Chester Le Street A now uncatchable, it was down to the youth
of Laura Weightman on Leg Four for Morpeth, against the Veteran experience
of Heather Robinson to destroy the Cestria dominance.
Heather was fifteen seconds up on Laura as they both left the change over
area and Chester Le Street A now had an unassailable seventy second lead.

That lead increased courtesy of Maxine Czarnecka's third fastest 11m33s,
however Laura's powerful eighth equal fastest 11m45s eventually won the
Silver for Morpeth by a margin of fifty three seconds.

Morpeth Harriers Womens B team finished a creditable seventh.
as second B team. courtesy of Claire Bruce (14m43s)
Kate Chapman (12m42s), M.Muller (14m14s)
and Gwenda Cavill (13m04s)

2008 Durham Cathedral Relays !
It was a medal winning day for Morpeth Harriers Womens
squad at the annual Durham Cathedral Relays
held at the Racecourse in Durham City on Sunday 20th January.

They finished four seconds ahead of an excellent Chester Le Street squad,
with North Shields Poly a lot further behind in third spot.
It had been Chester Le Street in front during the first two legs
by Aiveen Fox (10m19s) and Jane Mooney (10m14s)
and when Under 17 star Laura Weightman took over on the final leg
she was chasing down a five second lead held by the County Durham squad.

Laura was having only her second competitive run since November,
having being out with a virus, that also rendered her unable to defend her title
at the North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships at Hartlepool.
However she clocked the fastest time of the day of 9m56s to ensure a superb victory.

Morpeth also had B and C teams competing in the Womens event.
Their C team finished seventh through Zoe Armstrong (10m47s)
Deborah Oakley (11m45s) and Margaret MacDonald (13m13s)

The Morpeth B Team finished thirteenth courtesy of Claire Bruce (12m31s)
Sally Welsh (12m32s) and Gwenda Cavill (11m49s)
